Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree? What other measures do you think might be effective?
Traffic has been dramatically increased over the last decades which raised pollution issues in the contemporary world. It is discussed various ways of solving this problem. It is agreed that the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems is to increase the price of petrol. It will be proven by analyzing how high petrol price affects on cars’ owners behaviour as well as producers’ strategy.
Firstly, as well-known, car owners spend some of their budget for maintaining the car in useful stage. Everyday car expenditure is payments for providing fuel, therefore changing of its price affects to the owner’s budget significantly. For example, if the price of petrol doubled, available finance of car owners is reduced, so in order to retain previous amount of money they chiefly will start to use public transport or bike instead of cars. In this situation the amount of traffic will tend to decrease. Thus, it is clear that the petrol prices act as a catalyst for reducing traffic cognition.
Secondly, if look at the consequences of increasing petrol prices from point of view of the petrol or car producers, it is clear that revenues of suppliers will decrease abruptly. And in order to embrace challenges producers should be ready to create alternative ways to maintain their business. For instance, when sales of BMW felt down, company would produce new economical cars powered by green energy. So the changes can accelerate the transition to the renewable sources of energy such as solar and wind power.
To conclude, there is merit to the argument that increasing the price of petrol is efficient way to solve environmental issues. Additionally, I personally believe that the fast, cheap and comfortable public transportation system can also solve traffic pollution problem as well as high tax rates on the private cars.
