Some people believe that culture will be ruined if it is used to earn tourism revenue, but others consider that tourism is the only way of protecting a culture. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

People have different views about whether tourism business truly preserve or give negative impact to the cultures which are developed for tourism. While there are convincing arguments both for and against these issue, I believe that the tourism industry brings a good contribution to protect and develop a culture.

On the one hand, some people might argue that tourism have a negative effect for culture based on several reasons. Firstly, the building of facilities and infrastructure to earn tourism revenue can destroy the habitat of local traditional and its culture.

For instance, The Inner Baduy people in West Java – Indonesia seem to migrate to another location, but still in geographical areas of their ancestor, due to the increasing number of foreign visitors that often do not obey the rule of their culture, such as not allowed to take picture, or bringing electronic devices.

Secondly, tourism creates pollution and waste which deteriorate the local resources on which culture inextricably depend. Finally, cultural tourism that often operated near indigenous tribes highly affect a rise in cost of living for local people. The price of goods, services and housing may increase significantly.

On the other hand, other people hold the idea that there are positive contribution from tourism industries to protect and develop a culture. One concern is that some areas in which culture live generally rely on tourism for their income.

Take Bali for example, many tourists from overseas that visit ancient temple sites or sacred sites of Bali, such as Tirta Empul Temple, are charged with the tourist development tax that has purpose for preserving these places.

Tourism also attracts investment from multinational companies, and the money collected from this investment can be spent as subsidies to protect the traditional sites and building, and even improving the standard of living. Moreover, tourism can promote the local people by creating employment in services like accommodation, transport, and entertainment.

In conclusion, there are reasonable arguments on both views, but I assert that tourism revenue is the essential income for preserving culture.
