IELTS Academic from 18th October (AUS/India/Pak/VN/PH/MONG)

Post by Ana2.9 »

Hi,

Just sharing these:

Academic Writing:
Questions no 2. (Philippines, India, Pakistan, Vietnam – Academic)
Task 1
- The process of small-scale production of smoked fish (diagram in 8 stages)

Task 2
Some people say it is not necessary to travel to other places to learn about their cultures. We can learn just as much from from books, films, or internet.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

I found the reading to be fine, as there weren't much T/F/NG or Y/N/NG types of questions.

The Listening completely put me off:

1) Life guard application form (what the hell was that street name? And the phone number was way too long! I barely caught the name of the department where she worked)
Some answers in order:
Pitkeithly,
Phone N°??,
accounts,
swimming coach,
Good concentration,
difficult people,
excellent vision,
sunday mornings,
cleaning and admin tasks,
the newspaper

2) TV programmes review
Some answers in an approximate order:
a) C(negative),
B (neutral)??,
B (neutral),
A (positive),
C (Negative)

b) comedy,
family,
documentary,
birds,
2050

3) Study of influence of Live music and visual arts on hospital patients
It's hard to remember the ABC choices!
Some answers in approximate order:
a) Lots of studies focus on children,
staff didn't like building at first,
??,
research had little impact on staff's routine,

In a random order...
b) The one phrase left out should be: "patient were cooperative".
?? = Live music impact
?? = ??
Children = left hospital earlier
Post surgery? = Patient heart /blood pressure were average
A&Emergency = Little impact
Geriatry= visual impact

4) A presentation on a town
Some answers in an approximate order:
a) lots of records in local archives,
originally ananimals market,
town stall fees used for town development
train,
Bell tower housed a prison

Some random answers:
b) market produce,
interviews
useless/ not very relevant/and irrelevant (??),
old photographs,
??

That's the best I can do!
Please fill in the gaps if you remember them or correct me! :)

Cheers!
Ana.

My Speaking question on that day was:

PART 1
- How well do you know people arround you? - What the Fish! I had to ask him to repeat twice, I couldn't barely understand the word ARROUND at the time. I thought "Wow, what is ARROUND? it seems familiar, but what is it?" lol.
- Do you think your place is an ideal place to live?
- What do you think about street market
- Do you prefer street market or supermarket?
- What is your favourite food?
- How often do you have your favourite food? (What the fish again, I was talking...well...as i do not live with my parents....blah blah blah, then i intended to say....so I have that favourite food at weekend, however at that time he stopped me and moved to part 2, so I did not have a change to tell how often I have my favourite food)

PART 2
- Describe the thing that i help my neighbours (then i list 4 things that i help them and forget to answer the 3 sub-questions, and i do not remember what they were)

PART 3
- Why people in general help each other?
- What is the advantage of helping the other?
- What is the disadvantage of helping people?
- Do people in urban areas know well each other?
- Do you think that this trend will continue (This drives me crazy, I indented to say it will continue and Government should do something about it, but then i implicitly considered that I agreed with the examiner, then I said only 1 idea that "the Government should do something about it....then i said....many policies should be applied to encouraged people to live in a close knit community...)

THE END

But i did not satisfy with my speaking at that time. Hope to get 6.5 on speaking

Well, I did the Academic Reading and to be honest I don't remember anything.
There is just TOO much to read to be remembered in the first place... :p

As for speaking, I talked about...

Part 1:
Do you work or study?
Why are you doing that job?
Which days are the best for you?
...??

Part 2: Cue card
Describe a place where you would like to have a home
-Where it would be
-How you know that place
-What is interesting there
...??

Part 3:
Should we all move to the countryside?
People in the countryside don't really work much. What do you think?
...??

The words were not exactly like that, but well, you get the gist of the topic... :p
I was too tired by my 2hours trip to the speaking test venue, so I'm afraid my memory is jumbled! :)

Hi Sinister Rock!!!

Thanks for your enthusiastic reply!!!

Unfortunately, I found out that we have totally different reading topics!!!! :(

But! Wait! Were u taking ACADEMIC module?

I had my speaking test yesterday 12:20 (local time: Sydney, Australia)

Part 1:

Do you work or study currently?
Why did you choose to do that job? Do you like it?
Do you think people can concentrate better in the evening or in the morning?
How's abt urself?
You can concentrate when it's totall quiet or with noise?
How can you keep yourself concentrate when you have to do long studying?

Part 2: cue card
Describe a famous person - not from your country - that you wish to meet.
Who is the person?
How can you know the person?
Why is the person famous?
Why do you wish to meet the person?

Part 3: talk abt famous
How to become famous today?
Ad and disad of being famous?
How can people be famous for long time?
What do u think abt people being famous bc of scandals?

Honestly I did quite bad this time even though it was not a hard topic... bc I was too stressed and a bit uncomfortable (bc of other things just happened the night before) so my brain was unable to work! I kept repeating my ideas, sentences and vocab...Have to book another one in November.

I have to achieve at least 7.0 for each band :| :| :| Seriously, sick of re-taking this test :x :x :x

How's your writing? Are u satisfied with it? I didn't have time to re-check so I was not confident since I found out that I did a lot of grammar mistakes, which should have been done!!!!

For Reading, my topics:
1: Undergraduates of Literature (dramatic texts, etc.)
2: Diet (it was like human eating habits revolution)
3: Tuatara (a type of lizard in NZ)

Hi kelly

I did my test in perth. It wasmy second test as i need 7 but was stuck at 6.5 in writing.

I said i agreed totally, but forgot to talk more about 1st part of statement.

Intro
We can learn about foreign cultures fr books and films because they are based on real life and share local issues
We can learnt information about foreign countries fr internet because it contains facts on languages, politic, history and geo and we don't need to travel there.
Conclusion.

Im not convinced by my plan, so task response will be low. Im just hoping they give me marks foy coherence and cohedoon as well as my vocab range.

Out of all skills, i think writing is the easiest toimprove. So don't be depressed by your score. It can ONLY get better with practice.

Good luck!

Hello Ana,

With the same task with you, I disagreed with the statement and i believe that we should travel to many places for culture learning. However I think that you should not worry too much about it because the examiners only give mark on how well your writing is. They include structure, vocabulary, grammar... and ideas are not highly concerned issues

Actually I do not satisfy with my writing also:
- Task 1: I realize that I wrote only 130 words. It looks 80% similar as below

The diagram provided illustrates how to produce smoked fish in small scale production. Clearly, there are eight steps and they are shown as below.

At the first stage, Fish are cleaned very carefully before mixing them with water and salt. After thirty minutes they are cooked under the flame for another five minutes. After that they are put into several pots which contain burning charcoal and dust at the buttom; fish are put above the charcoal and dust, under wooden panels for 30 minutes.

After all, yellow colouring substances are poured onto the fish and finally we will have smoked fish and yellow smoked fish. The products will be carefully packed into several boxes ready for trading

- Task 2: i used 1 sentence and i thought it was good, however, now i realize that i made a mistake. I wrote "....therefore further consideration should be taken into account..." Instead of "<something> should be taken into account/consideration".

My Ideas on the task are as below:
+ Learning culture need mutual interaction with people and practical experiment. I have example that we will know better about how japanese are structural characteristic by only visiting that country (i think i d better use the word disciplined rather than structural, i forget thia word). And practical experience makes us remember longer...
+ I said that traveling helps us know more of the things that are not offically writen. For instance 1 saigonese fail to open a business of selling pho - original cuisine of Hanoian because they do not know perspectives of hanoian if they do not have practical expereince
+ However traveling like this cost money (drawback), and further consideration should be taken into account

Hope to get 6.5 on this

Hi Arkentos,

I wrote similar steps in my task 1, only that I went into details about the type of containers used (sauce pan, vat container, sprays, etc...), to get up to the 150 words.
You can only lose at most 1 point from writing less words, so you should be fine!

Task 2 is always the one that flips the writing score up. For various stupid reasons as: "you didn't stick to the standard plan" or "I can't read your handwriting" or even "you didn't talk a lot about this part". I've had them all when practising with an examiner!
Basically, you just do your best. If it's not enough, you go at it again, and again... and hope to "get it" in the end.

The truth is IELTS "Academic" writing is more "Article" writing than "University" or "Professional" writing. That's why it comes across as brain bashing. We are not journalists, just university students and/or professionals...

Hi Sinister!

Yup! That's why we have different Reading topics. :D

Same as me. I did try several times and I got 6.5 for writing 6 out of 7 times even though I can clearly recognize the significant differences between each time I took the test. For example, I couldn't finish task 1 and task 2 contained a lot of grammar mistakes but still got 6.5 while I'm confident that I did really well the following time and still 6.5   . I'm so frustrating when I have to keep re-taking this stupid test. :x :x :x

I'm currently working as an accountant and my boss also told me that this exam was so subjective and somehow it was unfair! She's so surprised when I can't achieve 7.0 in writing/speaking. :?: :?: :?:

But, u just got your expected result for 11/10 Test, rite (I saw on other post)? Congratulationssssssss :D :D :D Finally, you can say goodbye with IELTS.

Maybe after 2 years she will have to take the Ielts again hehe
I will have the result this 18th Oct. I think that i can get at least 6.5 on the listening that day, but i do not know how my results of the rest 3 skills will be.
For reading, i expect to get 6.0 or 5.5 base on the test
For writing, I hope to get 6.5, but i am not so sure, maybe I will have 7.0 or 6.0
Speaking is similar with writing
I will go the the pagoda for praying this afternoon =))

Hi Kelly,

First of all, I feel really really sorry for you. I took the test 10 times in total in last 4 months (18th Oct was my 10th try). I booked every test date because I knew that I am not that bad for Band 7.0 and that I don't need any special preparation to get to Band 7.0 in each. Luckily though I hit the bull's eye on 11th Oct test (my 9th try). I will say that you need more luck than preparation to pass this creepy exam. May be on the 11th Oct my luck was strong.

This morning I picked up my result from Monash. I opened the envelope and saw another miracle! and is that I got L 7.5 R 7.0 W 7.0 S 8.0 Overall 7.5 This is just crazyy..I have no use of this result now. It should have came at 2nd or 3rd try. We don't have any control over the writing and speaking examiners therefore you need solid luck. I would advice you that if you are very confident in Speaking then apply for EoR otherwise try another test on 22nd Nov.Try Deakin if you are in Melbourne.

I hope you will get the required score in your next sitting. But please don't give up.
