IELTS General Training Task 2 Essay

Post by Prashant Hirani »

Topic :-

Due to the development and rapid expansion of supermarkets in some countries, many small, local business are unable to complete. Some people think that the closure of local business will bring about the death of local communities. To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

These days, debates are happening around the world over the need of building more and more supermarkets into developed countries. Many people believe that such developments would end the culture of local business and subsequently it will mark the end of local communities while many others argue that governments should have to create more supermarkets as it both saves time and money. This essay will discuss both the aspects before drawing any logical conclusion.

On the one hand, there are enormous benefits of having supermarkets into nearby community. First, supermarkets saves individual time as one can get everything from one place only. For example, after super busy day at office, I often visits nearby supermarkets to purchase groceries, fresh vegetables and packed food as compared to visiting multiple shops to purchase those items. Secondly, supermarket concept helps in saving money as generally products are cheaper in rate and whatmore, it offers great discounts as well. This makes it clear that why more and more people are moving towards supermarkets trend.

On the other side, detractors have their reasons to believe that supermarkets are causing death to local business and local communities. Most important reason is price competitiveness. As most of the local and small scale vendors are not able to purchase the products into bulk and neither they are able to import the same from other parts of the world. As a result, they have to sell the products on bit higher rates. Second point to make here is local shops have very limited varieties to offer to their customers. Furthermore, it is often seen that many of their products are not up to the mark and not living up to the standards of ongoing fashions and trend. Due to all above reasons, it is clear that small and local businesses are facing very hard time and are at the verge of death.

As the above discussion shows, supermarket concepts has an upper edge over the local business as they offer wide varieties of goods, offers best prices and saves citizens time. Admittedly, it is true that such developments will overtake local markets and vendors and consequently will bring the death to local communities.

Hello!

Smaller vendors can buy in bulk, but not in as large quantities as the big supermarkets.
Smaller vendors absolutely can import products. I know of numerous examples in Europe and Asia.
The point about very limited varieties is not such a clear example. If the shop sells the variety/brand that people want ...
The point about quality and fashion is almost certainly incorrect. At least many people believe it is incorrect, which is why Prada handbags sell for more than WalMart handbags.

It's tempting to agree with the conclusion, but it simply doesn't match reality. In Britain, many small shops survive, depsite competition from big supermarkets. They often do this by selling things that the big shops do not or by beating them on customer service.

Overall, quite a good essay, but better expression of points would make it much better.

All the best,
David
